PM Modi Spotlights Maritime Sector Growth, Reaffirms Vision On National Maritime Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underscored India’s rich maritime legacy and reiterated the government’s commitment to unlocking the vast potential of the sector on the occasion of National Maritime Day.

Observed annually on April 5, the day marks the historic voyage of the first Indian-owned ship, SS Loyalty, which sailed from Mumbai to London in 1919. Instituted in 1964, it recognises the maritime industry’s vital contribution to India’s economy, global trade, and the dedication of seafarers.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister highlighted the enduring importance of those associated with the maritime sector, noting that their efforts continue to strengthen the country’s economy, trade, and connectivity. He reiterated that India remains focused on harnessing the immense potential of the maritime domain to ensure a prosperous future.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended greetings, acknowledging the professionalism and courage of maritime personnel. He emphasised their role in driving national growth during both stable and challenging times.

Similarly, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri pointed to India’s long-standing tradition of global connectivity through sea routes and praised the contribution of seafarers to economic development.

Reforms and Future Growth Vision

In a video message, the Prime Minister stated that India’s maritime sector is advancing rapidly in the 21st century. He highlighted the replacement of colonial-era shipping laws with modern, forward-looking legislation aimed at empowering state maritime boards, enhancing safety and sustainability, and digitising port operations.

Under the ‘Maritime India’ vision, more than 150 initiatives have been launched, resulting in a doubling of major port capacity, reduced turnaround time, and a surge in cruise tourism.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways also marked the occasion by honouring the resilience of seafarers, particularly those operating under challenging conditions in West Asia, and reaffirmed its commitment to their welfare.
