Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the strength of India-Malaysia relations during his two-day official visit to Malaysia on February 7-8, 2026, undertaken at the invitation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
PM Modi used the visit to reinforce cooperation in trade, defence and cultural engagement, while placing special emphasis on the Indian diaspora’s role in strengthening bilateral goodwill.
In a post shared on X, PM Modi documented a warm and energetic reception by Kuala Lumpur’s Indian community.
Photographs showed the Prime Minister wearing a saffron vest as he interacted closely with diverse crowds.
Community members waved Indian and Malaysian flags and held placards bearing ‘NAMO’, reflecting enthusiasm and pride.
The visuals underscored the deep emotional connection between the diaspora and India.
PM Modi described the reception as deeply moving. He praised the ‘energy, affection and pride’ displayed by the Indian community, noting that their presence forms a vital human bridge between the two nations.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that people-to-people ties remain the foundation of strong diplomatic relations.
The Indian-origin population in Malaysia, numbering nearly 2.9 million, represents one of the largest Indian diasporas globally.
PM Modi acknowledged their dual identity. He said the community has integrated seamlessly into Malaysian society while preserving India’s cultural heritage across generations.
PM Modi also highlighted the diaspora’s economic significance. He noted that Indian-origin Malaysians contribute an estimated seven per cent to Malaysia’s gross domestic product.
Their presence spans key sectors such as information technology, hospitality, healthcare, education and small enterprise.
The Prime Minister said these contributions strengthen Malaysia’s growth while enhancing India’s global standing.
During the visit, PM Modi reiterated that India views Malaysia as a trusted strategic partner in Southeast Asia.
He stressed that closer engagement with the diaspora complements formal cooperation in trade, defence and culture.
The visit, he said, aims to convert shared history and mutual trust into tangible outcomes.
PM Modi concluded by underlining that the Indian community’s success abroad reflects India’s growing global confidence.
He affirmed that India will continue to support its diaspora while deepening comprehensive ties with Malaysia through dialogue, partnership and shared prosperity.
