PM Modi Announces India To Establish Its First Consulate In Malaysia Shortly

PM Modi announced that India will open a consulate in Malaysia soon, a step to deepen bilateral ties. He made the declaration at the Selamat Datang Modiji community programme in Kuala Lumpur.

The event featured a cultural presentation by 800 artistes, recorded as Malaysia’s largest Indian traditional dance.

PM Modi noted the government’s decision to extend OCI eligibility to Malaysian citizens of Indian origin up to the sixth generation.

The Prime Minister added that the new consulate will strengthen outreach to the Indian community and broaden cooperation between the nations.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the mission will enhance consular services and facilitate closer engagement.

The announcement drew applause from community members and dignitaries, including Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who accompanied PM Modi to the gathering.

Prime Minister Modi praised the diaspora’s welcome and lauded their contributions to Malaysia’s development.

He reaffirmed India’s commitment to the welfare of its nationals abroad and to deepening people-to-people ties.

Deepening People-Centric Ties

Recalling Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army’s legacy in Malaysia, PM Modi honoured shared history and cultural bonds.

He described the bilateral partnership as IMPACT, India Malaysia Partnership for Advancing Collective Transformation.

Prime Minister Modi urged the community to support Viksit Bharat and Malaysia Madani.

He noted the Tamil diaspora’s long-standing presence and cited culinary links such as roti canai, Malabar parotta and teh tarik.

Prime Minister Modi outlined India’s economic rise, saying the country moved from the eleventh to the fourth-largest economy and is set to become the third.

He cited progress in infrastructure, green energy, digital strategy and new technologies.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s fintech success, noting the nation accounts for half of global real-time digital payments.

He added that UPI payments will soon be available in Malaysia, boosting tourism and commerce.

As cultural diplomacy, the Prime Minister announced a Thiruvalluvar Centre at the University of Malaya to complement the Thiruvalluvar Chair.

He also unveiled Thiruvalluvar scholarships to promote academic exchanges. He invited Malaysians to visit Incredible India and deepen people-centred ties.

The visit will convert goodwill into tangible cooperation.
