PM Modi Showcases Cultural Diplomacy Reinforcing India-Malaysia Strategic Civilisational Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the growing role of cultural diplomacy in strengthening India-Malaysia relations during his official visit to Kuala Lumpur on February 7-8, 2026.

It highlights how more than 1,000 Sanskrit-derived words continue to feature in the Malay language, as supported by linguistic research.

PM Modi noted that such scholarship reinforces awareness of long-standing civilisational links.

The Prime Minister described these exchanges as powerful examples of India’s soft power.

He said cultural learning deepens bilateral understanding and motivates youth to engage meaningfully with history.

PM Modi also shared visuals of his warm welcome by the Indian diaspora in Kuala Lumpur.

A Wayang Kulit shadow play of Titah Seri Rama, inspired by the Malay Ramayana, marked a key highlight.

The presentation featured intricate shadow play against a backlit screen, with English subtitles conveying themes of unity, duty and alliance.

PM Modi observed that Indian epics have influenced Malaysian art forms for centuries.

Wayang Kulit, now recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, stands as a living symbol of this exchange.

The performance set a positive tone ahead of PM Modi’s bilateral meetings on trade and security cooperation.
