PM Modi Salutes Birsa Munda’s Legacy On Martyrdom Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to renowned tribal freedom fighter and social reformer Birsa Munda on his martyrdom day, describing him as a symbol of courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the rights of tribal communities.

Remembering the tribal icon, PM Modi said Birsa Munda fought fearlessly against British colonial rule to protect water, forests and land, while dedicating his life to preserving the dignity, culture and identity of tribal society.

The Prime Minister said Birsa Munda’s supreme sacrifice for the motherland would continue to inspire patriotism and national pride among future generations.

Widely revered as one of India’s most influential tribal leaders, Birsa Munda led the historic Ulgulan, or Great Tumult, against British rule and oppressive land policies in the Chotanagpur region during the late nineteenth century.

Through the movement, Birsa Munda mobilised thousands of tribal people to defend their traditional rights, identity and land ownership.

Although his struggle was centred in present-day Jharkhand, Birsa Munda’s legacy extends far beyond the region. His contributions continue to resonate across several states, including Assam, where many members of the tea garden community trace their ancestral roots to the Chotanagpur plateau and regard him as a powerful symbol of resistance, self-respect and empowerment.

Over the years, Birsa Munda has gained wider recognition for his role in India’s freedom struggle and his fight for tribal rights.

To honour his contributions, the government observes his birth anniversary on November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, celebrating India’s tribal heritage and freedom fighters.

Birsa Munda died in British custody on June 9, 1900, at the age of 25, but his legacy continues to inspire generations.
