HD Deve Gowda Hails PM Modi’s Historic Tenure As Democratic Milestone

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emergence as India’s longest continuously serving democratically elected Prime Minister underscores the remarkable progress of the country’s democratic framework.

In an article, Deve Gowda stated that surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure illustrates how India’s democratic institutions have strengthened and expanded since Independence.

According to Deve Gowda, Nehru assumed leadership during a unique period in Indian history when the nation was newly independent and political competition remained limited. He noted that Congress dominated the political arena in the early years, while opposition parties had only a marginal presence despite participating in elections.

Drawing a comparison with the present era, the former PM said that PM Modi has led the country in a far more competitive and diverse political environment marked by significant social, economic, and demographic changes.

Deve Gowda emphasised that neither he nor PM Modi entered national politics with the advantages of a political dynasty or inherited influence.

Reflecting on his own brief tenure as Prime Minister, Deve Gowda said PM Modi’s ability to secure repeated electoral mandates over an extended period remains an exceptional accomplishment in Indian politics.

A More Inclusive Cabinet

The former Prime Minister observed that the current Union Cabinet includes wider representation from various social groups, including Other Backwards Classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and women. He also mentioned initiatives aimed at increasing women’s participation in legislative bodies as part of efforts to make governance more inclusive.

Deve Gowda remarked that modern political leaders face continuous examination through television channels, digital platforms, and social media networks, unlike their predecessors. He credited PM Modi with maintaining strong communication with citizens through outreach programmes such as Mann Ki Baat while navigating this highly visible political environment.

Concluding his observations, Deve Gowda said PM Modi’s longevity in office stems from sustained public interaction, responsiveness to democratic accountability, and consistent electoral endorsement.
