Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke over the phone on Thursday, discussing the need for peaceful resolutions to the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, while also reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the India–France strategic partnership.
Prime Minister Modi said he had a ‘very good conversation’ with President Macron, during which they exchanged views on ongoing global challenges.
The leaders emphasised the importance of peaceful resolutions to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, with PM Modi reiterating India’s consistent support for peace and stability.
Macron also briefed PM Modi on recent meetings in Washington, where leaders from Europe, the United States and Ukraine convened.
He shared his assessment of the situation in Gaza and expressed support for the early conclusion of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the talks reviewed progress on trade, defence, civil nuclear cooperation, technology and energy.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and agreed to mark 2026 as the ‘Year of Innovation’ to celebrate advancements in the partnership.
India and France share a long-standing strategic partnership that spans multiple sectors, including defence collaboration and cooperation in space and civil nuclear domains.
Macron’s discussion with PM Modi came shortly after he participated in a high-level meeting in Washington. There, he joined US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
The gathering followed Trump’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week.
The recent dialogue adds to a series of diplomatic exchanges that underline the strength of India–France relations.
In February, Macron congratulated India on its 79th Independence Day, recalling his warm welcome to PM Modi in Paris earlier this year. He expressed confidence that the partnership will continue to grow towards 2047 and beyond.
Last month, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noel Barrot, also highlighted the enduring trust between the two nations during his interactions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
With shared ambitions in technology, defence, energy, and global governance, the India–France partnership remains a vital pillar of stability in an increasingly multipolar world.
