PM Modi Inaugurates Vizhinjam Deepwater Port; Calls It A Beacon Of Modern Progress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram and hailed it as a ‘symbol of new-age development’.

PM Modi extended his congratulations to the people of Kerala and the nation during the ceremony.

The port, developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), is India’s first deep-water transshipment hub.

The event saw the presence of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

The Kerala government and APSEZ constructed the project at a cost of Rs 8,900 crore under a public-private partnership model.

It represents one of the state’s most ambitious infrastructure efforts.

In his address, PM Modi highlighted the port’s strategic significance and its harmony with the natural landscape.

“On one hand, there is this big sea with so many opportunities and on the other hand, there is beauty of nature, in between there is this ‘Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport’, which is a symbol of new-age development,” Prime Minister Modi stated.

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to extend wishes on the occasion of Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti.

PM Modi, however, recalled his visit to the philosopher’s birthplace three years ago. He also noted the installation of a statue at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

“Today is the birth anniversary of Lord Adi Shankaracharya. Three years ago in September, I had the opportunity to visit his birthplace. I am happy that a grand statue of Adi Shankaracharya has been installed in the Vishwanath Dham complex in my parliamentary constituency Kashi. I have got the opportunity to unveil the divine statue of Adi Shankaracharya in Kedarnath Dham in Uttarakhand. Today, the doors of the Kedarnath temple have opened in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand,” PM Modi further asserted.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, speaking at the event, thanked the Prime Minister for dedicating the project to the nation. He also acknowledged the Adani Group’s role in executing the venture.

He remarked, “On behalf of the people of Kerala, I once again express our sincere gratitude to the Prime Minister for visiting our state to dedicate the landmark project to the nation. I also extend my congratulations to the Adani Group for executing this mission with excellence.”

The port is being developed under a landlord model with a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) framework.

The private concessionaire, Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited, began construction on 5 December 2015.

Located just 10 nautical miles from key international shipping lanes connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East, the port is likely to reduce India’s reliance on foreign ports for transshipment, boosting the nation’s maritime capabilities.
