During his visit to the Polish capital on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the enduring historical ties between India and Poland by paying his respects at three significant memorials: the Dobry Maharaja Memorial, the Kolhapur Memorial, and the Monument to the Battle of Monte Cassino.
The Dobry Maharaja Memorial commemorates Jamsaheb of Nawanagar, now Jamnagar, Gujarat, for his exceptional humanitarian efforts during World War II.
Jamsaheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja provided refuge to over a thousand Polish children, earning him the revered title of the Dobry (Good) Maharaja in Poland.
At the memorial, PM Modi engaged with the descendants of those Polish children, reflecting on the enduring legacy of Jamsaheb’s compassion.
Next, Prime Minister Modi visited the Kolhapur Memorial, which was dedicated to the princely state of Kolhapur’s generous support of Polish refugees during the war.
The Valivade camp in Kolhapur sheltered around 5,000 Polish refugees, including women and children.
PM Modi met with survivors and their families, further acknowledging Kolhapur’s pivotal role in providing sanctuary.
The visit also included the Monument to the Battle of Monte Cassino, which honors the collective bravery of soldiers from Poland, India, and other nations who fought together in the famed battle in Italy.
The Prime Minister’s homage at this site highlights the shared military history and mutual respect between the nations.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that PM Modi’s visit reaffirms the special and enduring relationship between India and Poland, celebrating their historical connections and ongoing collaboration.
