PM Modi Highlights Maritime, Energy Strategy In Rajya Sabha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday outlined comprehensive measures to protect citizens from global oil volatility while ensuring uninterrupted international energy supply chains. He underscored the Centre’s commitment to maintaining operational maritime routes amid the escalating West Asia crisis.

Addressing the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi revealed that an extensive initiative is underway to develop ‘Made in India’ vessels, thereby reducing reliance on foreign shipping operators in a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape. He firmly advocated self-sufficiency across sectors, particularly in fuel logistics and maritime trade corridors.

The Prime Minister stated that nearly 90 per cent of India’s trade currently depends on foreign ships, exposing the nation to external vulnerabilities during conflicts.

To counter this, the government has earmarked Rs 70,000 crore to expand indigenous shipbuilding capacity.

PM Modi affirmed that India is progressing towards becoming a significant force in ship construction, dismantling, maintenance, and overhaul services. He reiterated that self-reliance remains central to insulating the economy from global disruptions.

Extending this vision, he highlighted advancements in domestic defence manufacturing, noting that a substantial portion of military equipment is now produced within the country.

PM Modi asserted that India’s economic fundamentals remain robust, while authorities continue to formulate contingency responses across immediate, medium-term, and long-term horizons.

Drawing parallels with pandemic management, he noted the formation of inter-ministerial groups to address the emerging fuel crisis.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned that the West Asia conflict has triggered severe energy instability, disrupting supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite challenges, India continues efforts to ensure the safe transit of essential cargo vessels.
