PM Modi Hails India’s Asian Games Cricket Gold, Calls Victory A ‘Joyous Occasion’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated the Indian men’s cricket team after it defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the Asian Games 2026 final to retain its gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

PM Modi hailed the team’s second consecutive Asian Games gold and described the achievement as a joyous occasion for the nation.

“The gold comes to India yet again! Congratulations to our Men’s Cricket Team on retaining their title at the Asian Games. This is indeed a joyous occasion for the nation. My best wishes to the team members for their future endeavours,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

PM Modi’s message followed the team’s memorable triumph, as India once again finished on top of the men’s cricket competition at the continental Games.

India scored 211/6 at the Karogi Sports Park in Nisshin after Pakistan won the toss and chose to field.

Abhishek Sharma led the charge with a blistering 61 off 28 balls, setting the tone for India’s innings. Tilak Varma then provided the finishing impetus with an unbeaten 51 from just 22 deliveries, while Shivam Dube also contributed to the late surge.

Pakistan responded strongly in the chase, with Hasan Nawaz keeping the contest alive through a spectacular 96 off 51 balls. However, India’s spinners and all-rounders maintained their composure during the tense closing stages.

Dube delivered the decisive moment on the final ball when he dismissed Nawaz, ending Pakistan’s innings at 192/6 and sealing India’s 19-run victory.

The result gave India back-to-back gold medals in men’s cricket at the Asian Games. The achievement also capped a successful campaign for Indian cricket, with the women’s team having earlier secured gold after defeating Sri Lanka in their final.
