PM Modi Hails Indian Diaspora As A Global Bridge On Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas

On 9 January, PM Modi extended warm greetings to overseas Indians, recognising their role in enhancing India’s global image and fostering international connections.

Taking to the social media platform X, he said the diaspora has enriched societies abroad while remaining rooted in Indian traditions.

Observed annually on 9 January, Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in 1915.

The day honours the contributions of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to India’s development and international stature.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Convention, first instituted in 2003, provides a platform for engagement between India and its diaspora.

Organised by the Ministry of External Affairs, the event also rotates across cities to highlight India’s regional diversity and cultural heritage.

The biennial convention and theme-based conferences promote knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration.

Moreover, the highest honour for overseas Indians, the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, is presented by the President of India.

It recognises individuals and organisations for their contributions to India’s image abroad, support for national causes, and the welfare of Indian communities worldwide.

PM Modi’s message underscores the enduring bond between India and its global diaspora, celebrating their role as a bridge connecting India to the world.
