As Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) completes seven years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed it as a visionary initiative that has reshaped the country’s public health system.
Calling it a revolution in healthcare, he said the scheme continues to ensure access, dignity, and financial security for millions of Indians.
Taking to X, PM Mod posted, “Today we mark #7YearsOfAyushmanBharat! This was an initiative that anticipated the needs of the future and focussed on ensuring top quality as well as affordable healthcare for people. Thanks to it, India is witnessing a revolution in public healthcare. It has ensured financial protection and dignity. India has shown how scale, compassion and technology can further human empowerment.”
Ayushman Bharat is the world’s largest health assurance scheme and currently covers over 55 crore citizens. More than 42 crore Ayushman Cards have been issued, granting families access to cashless treatment at the point of care with no out-of-pocket expenses.
The initiative aims to protect low-income households from medical-induced poverty. So far, crores of Indians have benefitted from hospital treatments, surgeries, and diagnostic services without financial hardship.
Government health expenditure has risen significantly—from 29 per cent to 48 per cent—since the scheme’s launch.
During the same period, out-of-pocket healthcare expenses dropped from 63 per cent to 39 per cent, easing the burden on households.
As a result, around six crore people are reportedly protected from poverty every year due to improved financial safeguards under the scheme.
Ayushman Bharat has extended healthcare to senior citizens through the Vay Vandana Yojana, with over 81 lakh cards issued—nearly half of them to women.
Beneficiaries have already availed treatments worth hundreds of crores.
Healthcare workers have placed strong emphasis on preventive care, conducting over 55 crore hypertension screenings and 48 crore diabetes checks at Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs across the country.
Over 5.7 crore yoga and wellness sessions have further promoted holistic health.
The initiative has created a tech-backed healthcare ecosystem, connecting 4 lakh+ facilities and nearly 7 lakh professionals. Over 81 crore ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) IDs and 41 crore teleconsultations have enabled care anytime, anywhere.
Authorities have set up nearly 1.8 lakh Aarogya Mandirs, bringing healthcare to the doorstep of both rural and urban communities.
The Economic Survey 2024–25 acknowledges the role of Ayushman Bharat in significantly reducing financial stress and out-of-pocket expenditure.
PM Modi reaffirmed the scheme’s long-term goal—to make healthcare equitable, accessible, and sustainable for every Indian.
As Ayushman Bharat enters its eighth year, it continues to act as a blueprint for inclusive healthcare, driven by scale, compassion, and innovation.
