PM Modi Government Strengthens Spice Industry Amid US Trade Tensions

Amid escalating trade tensions with the US over Donald Trump’s tariffs, the PM Narendra Modi government is intensifying efforts to protect India’s agricultural sector.

Officials have doubled down on initiatives to support farmers and strengthen agricultural industries, particularly the spice sector.

As the world’s largest producer, consumer, and exporter of spices, India is leveraging rising global demand for its aromatic products. Government measures have boosted agricultural exports, ensuring farmers gain both income and international recognition.

Policy Push to Boost Agricultural Exports

The Agriculture Export Policy, launched in 2019, set a target to double farm exports by diversifying both products and destinations. The government has focused on high-value and value-added agricultural goods to maximise export potential.

In addition, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund provides Rs 1 lakh crore in financial assistance to agri-entrepreneurs, startups, and farmer groups for post-harvest management and farm asset creation. These efforts have strengthened value chains and improved global competitiveness.

The 19th edition of FI India and the 7th edition of Propack India Expo, held in Greater Noida, highlighted India’s culinary heritage and government support for the spice sector.

The event featured more than 340 exhibitors and drew over 15,000 professionals from the food processing, packaging, and supply chain industries.

Industry leaders praised government initiatives. Yogesh Mudras, Managing Director of Informa Markets in India, said India’s spice exports had reached $4.45 billion under the PM Modi government’s leadership.

Prime Minister Modi has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting farmers in the face of Trump’s tariffs.

“For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority,” he stated.

The government has engaged in discussions with the Trump administration on multiple sectors, including electronics, medical equipment, and chemicals, to avert trade disputes while defending India’s agricultural exports.

Trump’s tariffs have hit key items such as frozen shrimp, prawns, basmati rice, and natural honey, but government policies are cushioning the impact.

The organic food market in India is projected to touch ₹75,000 crore by 2025, as consumers increasingly opt for healthier and plant-based options. Farmers and small businesses are benefiting from this shift, which is expanding opportunities in fruits, vegetables, and organic produce.

Dr Meenakshi Singh, CSIR Chief Scientist, highlighted the role of 37 R&D labs in boosting innovation and food safety.

India currently exports over 60 varieties of spices to more than 200 countries. Industry leaders note that visionary government policies and robust leadership have cemented India’s position in the global spice market.

Dr Prabodh Halde, Chairman of CASMB, stressed India’s food processing industry’s strategic global role and vast growth potential.

Mitigating the Impact of US Tariffs

To counter Trump’s tariffs, the government is boosting agri-R&D, strengthening value chains, and promoting ‘Swadeshi’ manufacturing.

PM Modi’s government promotes local production and exports to cut foreign dependence and create opportunities for farmers and small businesses.
