Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Vladimir Putin on his re-election as President of Russia and expressed a commitment to strengthen the strategic partnership between their countries. Putin secured his fifth term as president with a significant victory, though this was questioned by politicians in Europe and the US.
“Spoke with President Putin and congratulated him on his re-election as the President of the Russian Federation. We agreed to work together to further deepen and expand the India-Russia Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership in the years ahead,” Modi said in a post on X.
During their phone conversation, Modi and Putin discussed enhancing the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. They also reviewed progress on various bilateral issues and exchanged views on regional and global matters. Modi reaffirmed India’s stance on favoring dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
India has a longstanding partnership with Russia, particularly in defense. Following the Ukraine war in 2022, India increased its imports of fuel from Russia. Despite Western sanctions, India reiterated its commitment to making decisions on Russian oil imports based on its national interest, while also advocating for an end to hostilities.
