Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended heartfelt congratulations to Mark Carney on his election as the new Prime Minister of Canada.
Expressing optimism about the future of Indo-Canadian relations, Modi emphasised shared democratic values and strong people-to-people ties in his message.
Posting on X, Prime Minister Modi stated, “India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people.”
Carney’s election marks a new chapter in India-Canada relations, which witnessed considerable tension under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trudeau’s repeated criticism of India, particularly over issues related to Khalistani extremism, contributed to a significant deterioration in diplomatic ties during his tenure.
Mark Carney, a prominent economist and former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, emerged as a strong and unifying candidate for Canada’s Liberal Party.
The Liberal Party chose him to succeed Trudeau, aiming to restore diplomatic goodwill and rebuild strained relationships, including with India.
During his campaign, Carney said, “What Canada will be looking to do is to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries, and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India.”
This message resonated with voters eager for more constructive global engagement.
Carney reiterated his intent to strengthen Indo-Canadian cooperation.
“It’s an incredibly important relationship, the Canada-India relationship, on many levels. Countries like Canada and India can play an outsize role in building an open, shared economy and global system,” he stated in a recent interaction.
Carney’s familiarity with India is rooted in his previous roles in international finance and governance.
As Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 global financial crisis, he successfully steered the country through turbulent times.
He later led the Bank of England during the complex post-Brexit period.
In 2020, the United Nations appointed Carney as its Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, and he collaborated with countries like India to align global financial systems with climate resilience goals.
Carney’s leadership profile presents a promising opportunity to reshape India-Canada relations through mutual respect and practical collaboration.
According to his campaign platform, “Mark offers the proven leadership and real plan we need to deliver change for our party and our country, and to build the strongest economy in the G7.”
Carney’s assumption of office has raised hopes for a diplomatic reset, with both nations expected to focus on trade diversification, economic cooperation, and reaffirming shared democratic ideals.
