Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India’s women’s hockey team after its 1-0 victory over China in the Asian Games 2026 final in Nagoya, ending the country’s 44-year wait for continental gold.
The victory also secured India a direct qualification berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
PM Modi described the achievement as a special moment for Indian hockey and praised the team’s skills, teamwork and determination.
“A very special moment for Indian Hockey!,” the Prime Minister wrote on X.
“The people of India are rejoicing in the success of the Women’s Hockey Team, who brought home the coveted Gold at the Asian Games, and that too after over 4 decades. This is the result of outstanding skills and teamwork. Their determination is very inspiring as well. My best wishes to the team for their upcoming endeavours,” he said in a post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office.
“May this success contribute to Hockey’s popularity across the nation,” PM Modi added.

India took the lead in the 10th minute when Lalremsiami produced a powerful reverse-hit to beat the Chinese goalkeeper.
Salima Tete created the opening with a precise pass into the circle, while Sakshi supplied the ball for Lalremsiami to finish.
The Indian defence then absorbed sustained pressure from China and protected the narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The result secured India’s second women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games, ending the wait since 1982.
The triumph also came after China had defeated India in their previous two meetings, including at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
India’s victory marks a significant moment for the women’s hockey programme, combining a long-awaited Asian Games title with qualification for the next Olympic Games.
The historic gold is expected to provide further momentum to Indian women’s hockey ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
