PM Modi Commissions INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, And INS Vaghsheer, Says India Emerge As first Responder In Indian Ocean Region

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday commissioned three frontline naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—at the Naval Dockyard, underscoring India’s commitment to a robust and self-reliant defence sector. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar attended the event.

Strengthening Defence With ‘Made in India’ Naval Combatants

PM Modi emphasized the importance of these additions to the Indian Navy. “The commissioning of three frontline naval combatants strengthens our global defence leadership and our quest for self-reliance,” he said.

Highlighting their indigenous construction by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders under Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Prime Minister lauded the collective efforts of engineers, workers, and the Indian Navy.

INS Surat, the final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, is among the world’s largest destroyers. With 75% indigenous content, it features advanced weapon-sensor systems and enhanced capabilities, supporting diverse helicopter operations.

INS Nilgiri, the first of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, incorporates modern stealth technologies, reduced radar signatures, and advanced aviation facilities, making it a versatile multi-role vessel.

INS Vaghsheer, the last submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, highlights India’s growing expertise in submarine construction. Built in collaboration with France’s Naval Group, it is designed for stealth operations and equipped with cutting-edge sonar and missile systems.

Vision For 21st Century Maritime Power

The Prime Minister stated that India is emerging as a major maritime power and a reliable partner globally, especially in the Global South. “India works in the spirit of development, not expansionism,” he said. Modi also noted the strategic importance of reforms like the establishment of the Chief of Defence Staff and the development of Theatre Commands.

He underscored the Navy’s historical significance, referencing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions. “This commissioning represents India’s readiness to safeguard its interests across all domains—land, air, water, the deep sea, and outer space,” he added.

Highlighting India’s maritime growth, PM Modi pointed out the rising number of Indian seafarers and the country’s global rank. He noted that India had fewer than 1.25 lakh seafarers in 2014, a figure that has now tripled to nearly three lakh, placing India 5th globally.

With 60 ships worth over ₹1.50 lakh crore under construction, PM said the port-led development model is boosting economic growth and creating employment opportunities. “India is rapidly progressing toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy. This growth will further accelerate maritime development,” he stated.

The commissioning of these naval assets marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance and modern defence capabilities.
