On the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the nation’s founding father and reinforced his commitment to a cleaner India by engaging in Swachhata (cleanliness) activities alongside young volunteers, emphasizing the importance of Gandhi’s enduring ideals.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi urged citizens to participate in cleanliness initiatives, stating, “Today, on Gandhi Jayanti, I took part in Swachhata related activities with my young friends. I urge you all to also take part in some or the other such activity during the day and at the same time, keep strengthening the Swachh Bharat Mission.”
The Swachh Bharat Mission, a flagship program of PM Modi’s government, was launched on this date in 2014, marking a significant step toward realizing a ‘Clean India’.
The mission aimed to mobilize the nation in pursuit of cleanliness, with a target completion date of 2 October 2019.
As one of the largest cleanliness campaigns in India’s history, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan saw widespread participation from citizens and government employees alike.
On its launch day, nearly 3 million government officials joined the initiative, with PM Modi himself leading the charge at India Gate in New Delhi.
He not only initiated the campaign with a pledge but also participated in a walkathon, surprising participants by marching a substantial distance alongside them.
By emphasizing Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a clean and hygienic nation, PM Modi continues to inspire collective action and a sense of responsibility among citizens to uphold the principles of cleanliness and hygiene.
