Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday described fishermen as a ‘strong foundation’ of Atmanirbhar Bharat, recognising their contribution to the country’s economy.
Addressing the 132nd episode of Mann Ki Baat, he said fishermen play a vital role in sustaining livelihoods and driving economic growth.
He noted that fishermen venture into the sea before dawn, braving challenging conditions to support their families and contribute to the nation’s development.
The Prime Minister added that government initiatives, including port development and insurance schemes, are helping improve their working conditions and livelihoods.
Highlighting the impact of technology, he said efforts are underway to support fishermen in dealing with changing weather patterns, enabling safer and more efficient operations at sea.
He also pointed to innovations in fisheries and seaweed cultivation, noting that such developments are encouraging self-reliance and creating new economic opportunities across the sector.
Sharing inspiring stories, the Prime Minister referred to Sujata Bhuyan from Sambalpur, who began fish farming in the Hirakud reservoir and turned it into a successful enterprise despite initial challenges.
He said her journey has inspired many women in her community.
He also highlighted the efforts of Havva Gulzar from Minicoy, who strengthened her fish processing business by establishing a cold storage facility, improving efficiency and growth.
The Prime Minister further mentioned Shivling Satappa Huddar from Belagavi, who adopted fish farming through a pond-based model and now earns a steady income.
Commending those involved in the fisheries sector, the Prime Minister said their efforts continue to strengthen the economy and promote self-reliance across the country.
