PM Modi Calls Census Participation A Collective Duty; Highlights Self-Enumeration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to actively participate in the ongoing Census 2027 exercise during his latest Mann Ki Baat address, describing the process as a collective national duty.

PM Modi said the census exercise had made significant progress and highlighted experiences from remote and snow-bound regions, including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand.

The government is conducting the second phase of population enumeration in these snow-bound areas in September.

The Prime Minister recalled his Independence Day appeal and encouraged citizens to spare some time to complete their census details.

He also highlighted the self-enumeration facility, introduced for the first time in Census 2027, which allows eligible respondents to submit household information online before field enumeration.

The digital facility is available in 16 languages, including Hindi, and generates a unique Self-Enumeration ID after submission. Citizens can provide their household information online, after which enumerators verify the details during the census process.

PM Modi highlighted examples from Uttarakhand, where census operations have reached remote areas. The government has scheduled population enumeration in September across snow-bound districts of the state, including Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi.

The Prime Minister stressed that broad participation will help create reliable data for welfare and development planning.

Census 2027 is being conducted digitally in two phases, covering housing and population enumeration. Officials are conducting the second phase in September 2026 across snow-bound areas of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

PM Modi urged citizens to use the available digital facility and participate in the exercise, stressing that broad public participation would help ensure comprehensive and accurate census data across the country.
