PM Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, surpassing the record held by the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

PM Modi completed 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister, overtaking Nehru’s post-1952 tenure.

Nehru led India after Independence, but this comparison counts only his tenure after the first general elections in 1952 and excludes the period when he headed the interim government from 1947 to 1952.

The milestone comes as PM Modi completes 12 years in office.

Since taking charge in May 2014, Prime Minister Modi has secured consecutive mandates in 2019 and 2024, becoming the first Prime Minister after Nehru to win three successive Lok Sabha elections.

While Indira Gandhi served for more than 14 years as Prime Minister, her tenure was not continuous.

PM Modi now holds the record for the longest uninterrupted term by an elected Prime Minister in India.

During his tenure, the government launched several landmark projects, including the new Parliament building, Central Vista redevelopment, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, INS Vikrant, the Statue of Unity, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat RRTS, the Kashmir rail link and the Ganga Expressway.

To mark the occasion, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will hold a meeting at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi, senior BJP leaders, Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers and NDA allies are expected to attend.

The alliance is likely to pass a resolution congratulating PM Modi on the historic achievement.

Senior Union Ministers, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, JP Nadda and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, will also participate in the meeting.

The gathering will review the NDA government’s achievements, discuss future policy priorities and outline the alliance’s roadmap for the years ahead.
