PM Modi & Assam CM Condoles Death Of Assam Tribune Chief PG Baruah

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed profound sorrow over the passing away of PG Baruah, Editor and Managing Director of The Assam Tribune Group, calling his death a major loss to journalism and public life in the Northeast.

In a message posted on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said he was deeply saddened by Baruah’s demise and noted that he would be remembered for his immense contribution to the media world.

“P.G. Baruah was deeply passionate about Assam’s progress and played a key role in popularising the state’s rich culture and heritage,” PM Modi said, adding, “My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

A Towering Figure in Northeast Journalism

PG Baruah was widely regarded as one of the most influential media personalities in Assam and the Northeast.

As the head of The Assam Tribune Group, he served as publisher of The Assam Tribune and Dainik Asom, steering the organisation through decades of political, social and technological change.

Under his stewardship, the group earned a reputation for its independent editorial stance, balanced reporting and commitment to credible journalism.

His leadership helped The Assam Tribune emerge as a trusted and influential voice in the region.

Tributes from Assam Leadership

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed his condolences, paying tribute to Baruah’s enduring legacy.

In a post on X, CM Sarma described him as not merely a media professional but an institution in himself.

He said Baruah upheld the highest standards of journalistic ethics and public responsibility at a time when the media landscape was rapidly evolving.

According to Sarma, his leadership strengthened the foundations of credible journalism in Assam and set benchmarks for future generations.

Chief Minister Sarma further noted that Baruah’s contribution extended beyond journalism. He consistently used the platform of The Assam Tribune to highlight developmental challenges, social issues and the cultural identity of Assam.

His commitment to preserving and promoting Assamese culture through the written word, Sarma said, would continue to inspire journalists, writers and thinkers across the region.

Leaders from across political parties, media organisations and civil society also expressed their condolences, remembering PG Baruah as a towering figure in Northeast journalism.

Many noted that his passing marks the end of an era for Assam’s media fraternity.

PG Baruah’s legacy as a principled editor, visionary media leader and champion of Assam’s voice will continue to resonate, leaving behind an indelible mark on Indian journalism.
