Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow on Thursday over the coal mining disaster in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. He announced ex gratia financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for families affected by the accident.
In a statement shared by the Prime Minister’s Office on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed condolences to the families of those who perished and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
The Prime Minister confirmed that the next of kin of each deceased will receive Rs 2 lakh. He added that the injured will be granted Rs 50,000.
This ex gratia aid forms part of the Centre’s immediate support for victims.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma responded by assuring that the Meghalaya government has commissioned a thorough investigation into the accident.
He emphasised that authorities will determine responsibility and hold all accountable parties to strict legal consequences.
“The state has initiated a comprehensive inquiry. Those responsible will be held liable under the law,” Sangma declared. He stressed that public safety remains paramount and the government will take all necessary administrative and legal measures in line with the inquiry’s findings.
Sangma further added, “In this period of grief, the government stands united with all affected families.”
The tragedy ranks among the deadliest mining incidents in recent years. Authorities reported that at least 16 workers lost their lives following a major explosion at a suspected illegal coal mine in the Thangsku area.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar confirmed, “Rescue teams have recovered sixteen bodies so far.”
He noted that search and rescue operations continue at the site. Officials said the PMNRF will promptly disburse ex gratia relief.
The funds will provide immediate assistance to victims while rescue and investigations continue.
