On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump, reaffirming both leaders’ commitment to a ‘mutually beneficial and trusted partnership.’ Through a post on X, PM Modi expressed his delight at speaking with his ‘dear friend’ President Trump.
“We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security,” PM Modi shared.
During the conversation, PM Modi also congratulated President Trump on his historic second term. The phone call marked the second conversation between the two leaders since Trump’s re-election in November. The first discussion took place shortly after Trump secured victory in the election.
The personal bond between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump dates back to Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021. The US President notably addressed the “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston in 2019, a major event attended by thousands of Indian-Americans. In return, President Trump visited India in February 2020 for the “Namaste Trump” event in Prime Minister Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

Both leaders are expected to meet in person later this year, with efforts underway to organize a meeting in February. However, no official announcement has been made yet. The two are likely to meet during the upcoming Quad summit, with India slated to host the summit this year.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently represented PM Modi at President Trump’s inauguration last week. Jaishankar attended various events, including a prayer service, where influential figures such as the Trump family, US cabinet members, and tech leaders like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Sundar Pichai were present.
Jaishankar has also been active in fostering bilateral relations, holding a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as participating in a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting alongside counterparts from Australia and Japan.
As of now, the White House has not yet issued an official statement regarding the phone call. However, a readout of the conversation is expected soon, as per usual practice. The ongoing close communication between PM Modi and President Trump signals the strengthening of Indo-US relations.
