PM Modi Advocates For Uniform Civil Code; Calls For An End To Divisive Laws

During his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong case for implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the nation, arguing that it is essential to eliminate discriminatory laws that divide society along religious lines.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, PM Modi emphasized the need for a secular legal framework that would ensure equal treatment for all citizens, regardless of their religious background.

The Prime Minister criticized the current civil code as discriminatory, reflecting the Supreme Court’s views from its discussions and rulings.

“The dream of our Constitution-makers was to have a Uniform Civil Code. It is our responsibility to fulfill this vision by abolishing laws that create divisions within our society,” PM Modi stated.

The Prime Minister called for broad public discourse on the UCC, urging citizens to voice their opinions and engage in the conversation.

“In a modern society, laws that separate people based on religion have no place. A secular civil code is necessary to eliminate religious discrimination and ensure true equality,” he added.

PM Modi’s Remarks Bolster BJP’s Push For Uniform Civil Code Nationally

PM Modi’s remarks carry significant weight as the BJP, along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has committed to introducing the UCC at a national level, similar to steps already taken in Uttarakhand.

The UCC however would establish a uniform set of laws governing personal matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and succession, replacing the current system where such issues are governed by religion-specific civil codes.

In addition to his call for the UCC, the Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities.

He mentioned initiatives like the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan and the promotion of sign language, reflecting the government’s commitment to respecting and dignifying all citizens.

PM Modi also praised the achievements of India’s paralympians, noting that their success showcases the strength and potential of every individual in the country.

“Our athletes in the Paralympics embody the power of our collective spirit, demonstrating the capabilities of every Indian,” PM remarked.

This Independence Day address, which marked PM Modi’s 11th consecutive speech from the Red Fort, underscored his government’s ongoing efforts to promote unity, inclusivity, and fairness across all sectors of society.
