The Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced on Monday, July 21, with tensions already running high.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha, while Congress leader Randeep Surjewala moved a suspension of business notice under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha to discuss the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and the government-led Operation Sindoor.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the tone for a charged legislative period as he addressed the media ahead of the session’s opening day.
A day earlier, the Centre signalled its openness to discussing Operation Sindoor in Parliament. It also signalled that the government plans to directly address US President Donald Trump’s controversial claim of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan—an issue the Opposition is ready to pursue aggressively.
The Congress has demanded a direct response from PM Modi on both matters. Gaurav Gogoi, Congress’s Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, stressed the seriousness of the Pahalgam attack and the alleged security lapses that enabled it.
He further criticised Trump’s remarks, claiming they undermine India’s dignity and question the valour of the Indian Army.
The Opposition is also expected to press the government for answers regarding the ongoing voter roll revision drive in Bihar.
