One Soldier Killed In Udhampur Gunfight As Multiple Anti-Terror Operations Continue Across Jammu & Kashmir

A soldier lost his life on Thursday during a gunfight with terrorists in the Basantgarh area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district.

According to the Army, a joint operation was launched with the Jammu and Kashmir Police based on specific intelligence inputs.

Officials stated, “Contact was established, and a fierce firefight ensued. One of our Brave hearts sustained grievous injuries in the initial exchange and later succumbed despite the best medical efforts. Operations are going on.”

Details of the fallen soldier are awaited.

Meanwhile, a separate encounter began on Wednesday in Kulgam district and was still ongoing.

The exchange of gunfire initially marked the start of the operation, though no further shots have been reported since Thursday morning.

Security forces also launched another operation in Poonch district on Thursday to target terrorist hideouts.

Multiple Anti-Terror Operations In Jammu & Kashmir

In total, three anti-terror operations are underway across Jammu and Kashmir. This is in addition to the large-scale search in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow.

The area was the site of a brutal terror attack on 22 April in which 26 civilians-mostly tourists-were killed by Pakistan-backed terrorists.

The ongoing Pahalgam operation is heavily tech-assisted, employing drones, helicopters, surveillance equipment, and sniffer dogs.

Security forces have been ordered to track down and neutralise those responsible for the killings, which included a Nepali national among the victims.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site on Wednesday to send a clear and strong message to the perpetrators of the massacre.

India has responded firmly to the Pahalgam terror attack.

  • The Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 has been suspended,
  • The Attari border crossing shut, and
  • Pakistani nationals have been asked to leave the country within 48 hours

Staffing at India’s High Commission in Islamabad has also been reduced by 70%.

Further, the military attaché at the Pakistan High Commission has been declared persona non grata. A diplomatic note has also been issued to Pakistan’s senior-most envoy in New Delhi.

The Indian government has also scheduled an all-party meeting to brief political leaders on the Pahalgam incident and its aftermath.

Separately, Jammu and Kashmir Police have busted a terror module in Bandipora linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Four overground workers were arrested, and a cache of illegal arms and ammunition was recovered, including two Chinese grenades, a 7.62 MM magazine, and 30 rounds.
