Northern States Order Primary School To Shut; IMD Issues ‘Red Alert’

Ahead of the biting cold wave, Northern states have ordered to shut the primary schools. Several northern schools of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Jharkhand has declared to extend the winter breaks due to extreme weather conditions. Moreover, the IMD has issued ‘Red Alert,’ predicting dense fog in upcoming days. Delhi experience a temperature dip to 2.8 degrees Celsius.

Schools Shut Due To Cold Wave

Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the cold in this situation. Northern state’s education departments have issued orders to keep schools closed. Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are some of the states that have shut schools or revised school timings.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that all schools will be closed till 21st January, amid the cold wave. He informed about the notice through his tweet in Punjabi scripting.

According to a circular issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE), All Delhi government schools will have a two-week winter vacation from January 1 to January 15, 2023. However, remedial sessions for Classes 9 to 12 will be held from January 2 to 14 to revise the syllabi and enhance the students’ learning-level academic performance, the circular issued said.

IMD Issues Red Alert

Amid the major temperature dip in the region, the India Meteorological Department has issuing a ‘red alert’; the Delhi airport alerted all its passengers on Thursday. The airport said all fight operations are presently normal but “low visibility procedures are in progress”. Between Monday and Tuesday, around 100 flights were delayed and a few were diverted because of fog.

“Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” it added.

The IMD has warned of difficult driving conditions, vehicle collisions and tripping of power lines.

Several incidents of collisions and vehicle pile-ups have been reported in the recent cases, from the areas that witness dense fog in the northern recent.

The weather agency said North India may witness several flight cancellations and train delays in the wake of low visibility due to dense fog. Those planning journeys should check with railways, airlines, state transport and ferry service operators for journey schedules.
