Nobel Laureate Paul Romer Praises India’s Digital Revolution, Urges Digital South To Follow

Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Michael Romer praised India’s digital revolution in a recent interview, calling it a model for other countries in the Digital South. Romer highlighted India’s Aadhaar initiative and urged nations to learn from India’s experience and develop their own ambitious digital solutions.

Romer emphasized that countries in the Digital South should not rely on wealthy nations to lead their digital transformations. He encouraged them to take inspiration from India’s self-driven approach to improving the quality of life for citizens through innovative technologies.

India’s Unique Success

Romer described India’s digital success as unique, stating that unlike many countries, India has ensured that its digital initiatives benefit all sections of society. He noted that this inclusive approach sets India apart from other nations and can serve as a learning model for countries aiming for similar progress.

Government’s Key Role

Romer also stressed the importance of government intervention in driving India’s digital success. He contrasted this with the more market-driven approach seen in the West, where the lack of collaboration between the government and the private sector has limited the benefits of the digital revolution. Romer believes India’s approach has maximized the potential of new technologies.
