NIA Court Defers Engineer Rashid’s Bail Hearing To 22 June

The Patiala House Court in Delhi deferred its decision on Tuesday regarding the interim bail plea of Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who recently emerged victorious in the Lok Sabha Elections from the Baramulla constituency in Jammu and Kashmir.

The court has set the next hearing for 22 June and has sought a reply from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the matter.

Engineer Rashid, presently incarcerated in relation to a terror funding case, had filed for interim bail to facilitate his participation in the forthcoming swearing-in ceremony as a Member of Parliament in the Parliament.

The court directed the NIA to provide information on the date scheduled for Rashid’s oath-taking ceremony.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will commence on 24 June, during which new members of the Lower House will take their oath.

On 27 June, President Droupadi Murmu will address the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid:

Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid contested and won the Lok Sabha Election from Baramulla as an Independent candidate, defeating National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Meanwhile, the 56-year-old politician jailed for over five years under UAPA charges of militant funding and money laundering.

His involvement surfaced during the investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who was apprehended by the NIA for allegedly financing terrorist groups and Kashmiri separatists.

The NIA’s chargesheet implicated several prominent figures including Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.

Baramulla Lok Sabha Election Results:

In a surprising turn, Engineer Rashid secured victory in Baramulla by a substantial margin of 2,04,142 votes.

He received a total of 4,72,481 votes, surpassing Omar Abdullah, who received 2,68,339 votes.

Sajjad Gani Lone however finished as the second runner-up with a total of 1,73,239 votes.

The outcome of Rashid’s bail plea remains pending as the court awaits further submissions from the NIA, crucial for determining his participation in the upcoming parliamentary proceedings.
