NGT imposed a fine of Rs 12000 crore on Maharashtra government, SC puts stay

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs 12 thousand crore on the Maharashtra government for damaging the environment. NGT said that the state has failed in the management of solid and liquid waste. This fine has been imposed on the state under Section 15 of NGT. Now after the fine has been imposed by the NGT, the Maharashtra government has approached the Supreme Court. Now the Supreme Court, while issuing notice on the petition of Maharashtra Government, has put an interim stay on the NGT order. Also, the Supreme Court has sought a reply from NGT within four weeks.

Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, on behalf of the Maharashtra government, said that the state government has issued the tender for STP and the work is going on, yet the NGT has imposed such a huge fine. Last year, NGT imposed a fine of Rs 12 thousand crore on the Maharashtra government for causing damage to the environment. Let us tell you that NGT had recently imposed a fine of Rs 3,500 crore on the Bengal government. It had asked Bengal to pay this fine for allegedly not managing solid and liquid waste management.
