New Safran Engine Maintenance Hub In Hyderabad To Make India Global Aviation Power: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Safran Aircraft Engine Services India (SAESI) facility in Hyderabad, describing it as a transformative step for the nation’s aviation capabilities.

The facility, dedicated to the maintenance, repair and overhaul of LEAP aircraft engines, positions India firmly on the global aviation map.

PM Modi emphasised that the project aligns with the government’s goal of making India self-reliant and globally competitive in aerospace technology.

The SAESI facility is Safran’s first dedicated MRO centre in India and marks the first time an international aircraft engine manufacturer has set up such an establishment in the country.

The developers have built the centre across 45,000 square metres within the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park-SEZ with an initial investment of approximately ₹1,300 crore.

Once fully operational by 2035, it will be capable of servicing up to 300 LEAP engines each year — engines that currently power popular aircraft models, including the Airbus A320neo and the Boeing 737 MAX.

The project is expected to employ more than 1,000 skilled Indian engineers and technicians, contributing significantly to the domestic aerospace workforce.

Strengthening India’s Aviation Ecosystem

Officials noted that the facility’s advanced technological capabilities will enable world-class engine maintenance, reducing India’s dependence on foreign MRO centres and decreasing foreign exchange outflows.

The centre will enhance the country’s aviation supply chain and meet the growing needs of airlines operating in one of the world’s fastest-expanding aviation markets.

PM Modi highlighted that such investments reflect increasing global confidence in India’s aerospace ecosystem. He further added that the facility will accelerate the country’s aspirations to emerge as a leading global aviation hub.

The establishment of the SAESI facility follows a series of policy reforms aimed at strengthening India’s MRO landscape.

Moreover, measures such as the GST reforms of 2024, the MRO Guidelines of 2021, and the National Civil Aviation Policy of 2016 have streamlined taxation, reduced royalty fees, and created a more favourable environment for aviation companies.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to building a robust MRO ecosystem capable of supporting the rapid expansion of India’s aviation sector.

The SAESI project will also generate high-value employment, stimulate aerospace innovation, and advance India’s long-term goal of becoming a global aviation powerhouse.
