PM Modi Calls For Duty-Driven Vision Of Viksit Bharat In Constitution Day Address

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked Constitution Day by writing an emotional and forward-looking letter to the citizens of India.

Observed annually on 26 November, Constitution Day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.

PM Modi described the day as a moment of immense pride, urging citizens to reaffirm their commitment to the nation’s constitutional values and duties.

Recalling the government’s decision in 2015 to officially declare 26 November as Constitution Day, PM Modi said the observance honours both the framers of the Constitution and the enduring democracy it nurtures.

In his letter, he highlighted how the Constitution has empowered millions, enabling individuals from humble backgrounds to rise to positions of great responsibility.

He shared personal memories that shaped his reverence for democratic institutions, including bowing at the steps of Parliament in 2014 and placing the Constitution on his forehead in the Central Hall in 2019. These moments, he said, symbolised the transformative power of constitutional democracy.

Tribute to the Framers of the Constitution

The Prime Minister paid tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar, Dr Rajendra Prasad and other members of the Constituent Assembly, including distinguished women who contributed to shaping the nation’s foundational principles.

He also recalled events such as the Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra and the recent special Parliament session, noting the remarkable public participation in these commemorative milestones.

Calling this year’s Constitution Day especially significant, PM Modi referred to landmark anniversaries such as the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhagwan Birsa Munda, as well as the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

He said these historic moments underscore the centrality of duties in strengthening national life, as outlined in Article 51A.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he emphasised that rights emerge from the performance of duties, asserting that duty-driven citizenship will lead to unity, growth and social harmony.

PM Modi highlighted that the nation has completed 25 years of the 21st century and now stands on the threshold of transformative progress.

With India set to celebrate 100 years of Independence in 2047, and a century of the Constitution in 2049, he urged citizens to prepare for these milestones by embracing responsibility and contributing to the nation’s development.

Strengthening Democracy Through Voting

The Prime Minister encouraged educational institutions to honour first-time voters on Constitution Day, fostering civic pride among the youth.

He further said that strengthening democracy begins with active participation in the electoral process.

As he concluded his letter, PM Modi invited every Indian to renew their pledge to uphold constitutional ideals and work collectively towards building a prosperous, self-reliant and duty-driven Viksit Bharat.

“On this Constitution Day, let us reaffirm our pledge to fulfil our duties as citizens. Together, we can build an empowered and developed India,” he wrote.
