National Voters’ Day: PM Modi Urges Citizens To Strengthen Democratic Values

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of National Voters’ Day, calling on citizens to actively participate in the electoral process and strengthen India’s democratic foundations.

He stressed that voting empowers every citizen with a voice to shape the country’s future and reinforces the collective resolve towards a Viksit Bharat.

National Voters’ Day is observed annually on January 25 to mark the foundation of the Election Commission of India in 1950, with the aim of honouring voters, promoting democratic values and encouraging participation, especially among the youth.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said the occasion is about ‘further deepening our faith in the democratic values of our nation’.

He congratulated officials associated with the Election Commission of India for their continued efforts to strengthen democratic processes and reiterated that being a voter is not merely a constitutional right, but an important duty that gives every citizen a decisive role in shaping India’s future.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister also penned a letter to MY-Bharat Volunteers and young citizens across the length and breadth of the country.

In the letter, he called upon India’s youth to celebrate the moment they become voters, or when people around them exercise their voting rights for the first time.

Describing voting as the greatest privilege and responsibility in a democracy, PM Modi urged young people to take pride in participating in the democratic process.

He further appealed to educational institutions to mark and celebrate the occasion when their students become eligible voters, emphasising the role of awareness and participation in strengthening democratic values.

Other Leaders share Greetings

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended greetings, stating that the Constitution has granted equal power to every voter and that the right vote can guide the nation in the right direction.

He emphasised the moral responsibility of safeguarding the voting system from external influence.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed similar sentiments, underlining the strength of India’s democracy and the importance of free, fair and inclusive elections.

Both leaders encouraged wider participation, especially among the youth.

The theme for National Voters’ Day 2026 is ‘My India, My Vote’, with the tagline ‘Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy’.

The Election Commission of India, a pivotal constitutional authority, has conducted 18 general elections and over 400 Assembly elections, ensuring the integrity of the world’s largest democracy.
