National Technology Day: PM Modi Hails India’s Scientific Progress

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his wishes on the occasion of National Technology Day, praising India’s scientific community for its role in strengthening the nation through innovation and research.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Greetings on National Technology Day. We recall with pride the hard work and dedication of our scientists, which led to the successful tests in Pokhran in 1998. That landmark moment reflected India’s scientific excellence and unwavering commitment.”

“Technology has become a key pillar in building a self-reliant India. It is accelerating innovation, expanding opportunities and contributing to the nation’s growth across sectors. Our continued focus remains on empowering talent, encouraging research and creating solutions that serve both national progress and the aspirations of our people,” the post read.

National Technology Day is observed every year on May 11 to commemorate India’s successful nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1998. The occasion also recognises the achievements of scientists, engineers and innovators who have contributed to the country’s technological advancement.

The Pokhran-II tests carried out under the leadership of noted scientist and former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

India conducted three underground nuclear tests on May 11, followed by two more tests on May 13 under Operation Shakti. The achievement placed India among the world’s recognised nuclear powers.

May 11 also marks other important technological milestones for the country. On the same day in 1998, the indigenous Hansa-3 aircraft completed a successful test flight in Bengaluru.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation also conducted a successful trial of the Trishul surface-to-air missile.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee later declared May 11 as National Technology Day to celebrate India’s achievements in science and technology. The day has drawn annual observances since 1999.

National Technology Day honours the contribution of India’s scientific community. It also encourages future generations to pursue innovation and research for national development.
