National Handloom Day: PM Modi, Amit Shah Highlight India’s Weaving Heritage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday extended greetings on National Handloom Day, paying tribute to India’s weavers and highlighting the handloom sector’s contribution to the country’s cultural heritage and economic development.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Today, on National Handloom Day, we celebrate India’s rich and vibrant handloom heritage. We also salute the skill, creativity and dedication of our weavers and artisans. For generations, they have preserved and enriched our traditions.”

Prime Minister Modi added that the government would continue supporting the handloom sector, describing it as a key pillar of rural empowerment, women-led development and the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The Prime Minister also encouraged people to share their favourite handloom products and ‘Get Ready With Me’ (GRWM) videos on social media using the hashtag #NationalHandloomDay, saying such participation would encourage and support India’s weaving community.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also greeted the nation on National Handloom Day, describing the handloom sector as a symbol of India’s rich cultural heritage and diversity that remained closely associated with the country’s freedom movement.

Shah credited Prime Minister Modi with introducing National Handloom Day to preserve the traditional craft and give it renewed momentum.

The Minister added that government initiatives, including domestic support measures and expanded global trade opportunities, have opened new avenues for weavers. He further urged people to support the sector by making handloom products part of their daily lives.

India observes National Handloom Day every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905.

The day recognises the contribution of handloom weavers to India’s cultural legacy while promoting indigenous textiles and encouraging public support for the sector.
