Nara Lokesh, who serves as Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Human Resources Development, met President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Monday. He attended the meeting along with NDA parliamentarians from the state.
The group, however, expressed their appreciation for the approval of the legislation granting Amaravati permanent capital status.
Lokesh shared on the social media platform X that meeting the President was an honour. He said he conveyed the gratitude of the people of Andhra Pradesh for the approval of the Bill.
Lokesh further stated that the President acknowledged the determination and sacrifices made by farmers. He added that she recognised the leadership shown by N Chandrababu Naidu in resolving the long-pending capital issue.
During the interaction, Lokesh presented a coffee table book highlighting Amaravati’s development journey.
“I also had the honour of presenting her a coffee table book that captures Amaravati’s journey and the inspiring story of our farmers’ struggle,” he said.
The publication, however, showcases the evolution of the capital and the role of farmers in its progress.
An official communication from Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed the visit by the delegation.
Taking to X, the post read, “A delegation from Andhra Pradesh, comprising Union Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, Minister of Education and IT in the Government of Andhra Pradesh Shri Nara Lokesh and Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha members of the state, called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”
President Droupadi Murmu granted assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, on April 6. The Bill formally establishes Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
The Union government also issued a gazette notification on the same day to implement the decision.
Parliament completed the approval process for the Bill on April 2. The Rajya Sabha passed it through a voice vote after the Lok Sabha had already cleared it.
The amendment updates the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, bringing clarity to the state’s administrative structure.
After Parliament passed the Bill, Lokesh and NDA MPs met PM Narendra Modi to express their appreciation. They acknowledged the Centre’s role in facilitating the legislation.
This development, however, marks a decisive step towards resolving the capital issue in Andhra Pradesh. It is expected to ensure administrative stability and support the state’s long-term development plans.
