Minister Piyush Goyal on hacking row: “I Think Someone Pranked Opposition Leaders”

New Delhi: Union Minister Piyush Goyal suggested that someone may have pulled a practical joke on some opposition politicians on Tuesday, dismissing the claims related to Apple’s warning of a “state-sponsored attack.”

“I believe the opposition leaders may have been the target of a practical joke. They ought to file a formal complaint, and the government will respond accordingly, Mr. Goyal told Reporters.

Attacking the leaders of the Opposition, the Union Minister claimed that because the Opposition is undergoing a weak period, they perceive conspiracies everywhere.

“I believe that the opposition is currently going through a very weak phase, leading them to perceive conspiracies everywhere.” In actuality, 150 nations have received this warning, and Apple has admitted that there was a glitch of some kind. Although hackers are active worldwide, it appears that Apple made a mistake in this regard as well. We will look into this. Apple has also being urged to participate,” he declared.

“The opposition can say whatever they want, but the nation is aware of their predicament because they are so mired in internal strife. Rather than making comments about us, they ought to focus on their own shortcomings. It is evident that the government is not involved in this and is not required to take any action in this manner,” the Union Minister continued.

Early on Tuesday, sources revealed that the “Apple warning message” was sent to Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and general secretary KC Venugopal’s phone, along with other opposition leaders from the INDIA alliance.

The opposition party leaders have claimed that this attempt to compromise their devices was orchestrated by the government.

Several political figures have claimed that their Apple devices have been hacked after getting the warning notifications. The leaders distributed the gadget screenshot of the alert they had received.

“No accusations are made here. The message was received earlier. What’s taking place? They wish to observe who is conversing with whom.The administration has not communicated with us. Nothing at all from the government’s end has reached my ears. They ought to elucidate,” the RJD MP said to Reporters on Tuesday.

Raghav Chaddha, an AAP MP, also received the purported hacking notification on his phone and asserted that it was an assault on the Indian populace.

Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi asserted that this is a Central Government-sponsored initiative in addition to alleging that her phone was hacked.

“It is clear from the warning I received last night that this is a Central Government-sponsored operation and that I should exercise cautious. This warning makes it quite obvious that these are’state-sponsored’ attacks. Why are just such communications being sent to the opposition leaders? This indicates that widespread monitoring is under progress. Investigating this is necessary, and the Center must provide an explanation,” Priyanka Chaturvedi told Reporters.

On the other hand, state-sponsored attacks are very sophisticated, expensive to build, and frequently have a short shelf life, according to Apple’s help page on its website. Such attacks will never be directed on the great majority of users.

Apple claims to have two ways of alerting the targeted consumers in the event that it finds conduct suggestive of a state-sponsored attack. After logging into appleid.apple.com, the user will see a Threat Notification at the top of the page. In addition, Apple will notify the phone numbers and email addresses linked to the user’s Apple ID through iMessage and email.
