“Many great leaders’ sculptures, including those of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi, have been moved to a different section of the Parliament House Complex from their prominent locations,” Kharge claimed in the letter.
In addition he highlighted the importance of installation position of Gandhi’s statue in Parliament complex. He said that installation of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in front of the Parliament building was done after careful consideration. And it has great significance in India’s democratic polity. He further stated that the removal of the statues “violates the basic spirit of our democracy.”
“This area had come to be valued as sacred throughout the years. Visitors and Members of Parliament (MPs) alike honored Mahatma Gandhi by assimilating his spirit inside themselves. Here, Members have attempted to democratically voice public concerns in order to bring the government’s attention and demand appropriate remedy,” Kharge wrote.
He added that he had concerns about Babasaheb’s statue being moved. Claiming that the statue’s advantageous placement made it easier for people to pay their respects to him on the anniversaries.
The government, however, denied the accusations made by the opposition. It further claimed that having the monuments in one location, or “prerna sthal,” would help tourists better appreciate and comprehend the rich history of the nation.
