Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Kicks Off Special Session With Oath-taking Ceremony

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly began its three-day special session on Saturday, marking the official start of a new legislative term following the recent state elections. Newly-elected legislators will take their oaths during this session, which runs from December 7 to 9.

Kalidas Kolambkar Appointed Pro-tem Speaker

Senior BJP leader Kalidas Kolambkar has been appointed as the Pro-tem Speaker to oversee the proceedings of the session. Kolambkar, who has served nine terms as an MLA, will play a crucial role in facilitating the swearing-in of the 288 newly-elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

Fresh Faces And Returning Legislators

Speaking to IANS, BJP MLA Parag Alavani highlighted the significance of the session, saying, “Maharashtra has given such a large majority to a coalition, and that is why this coalition has received such a huge mandate.

The swearing-in of all the legislators will take place over the next three days. Many will be returning members, while some new faces will also join.”

Debutants Share Their Enthusiasm

Among the first-time MLAs is Amol Khatal, elected from the Sangamner Vidhan Sabha constituency. Expressing his excitement, Khatal said, “The trust the people have placed in me is truly overwhelming. The warm reception I received from my voters, media, and colleagues today validates their faith in me. This respect is not just for me but for my voters and my taluka as well.”

Another new face, Neha Dubey, a BJP MLA, also arrived at Vidhan Bhavan for her oath-taking ceremony. Her arrival added fresh energy and enthusiasm to the event, as she joins the legislative assembly for the first time.

Development And Progress The Focus For New Legislators

Shiv Sena MLA Amshya Padvi, another first-timer, emphasised his commitment to his constituency’s development. “We were elected on the promise of development. The previous MLA failed to deliver, and that’s why I have been chosen based on my commitment to work,” he stated. This sentiment resonated with many other legislators, reflecting the aspirations for progress in their respective constituencies.

Election Of New Speaker On The Horizon

The special session will also witness the election of a new Speaker, setting the tone for the legislative agenda for the coming term. This step is pivotal in solidifying the structure of the Assembly for the next legislative period.

As the session progresses, Maharashtra’s newly-formed legislature will focus on advancing the state’s priorities, with fresh energy from both veteran and first-time legislators.
