Maha Kumbh Mela Boosts India’s GDP Growth; Drives ₹3 Lakh Crore Economic Surge

The recently concluded Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is expected to boost India’s GDP growth and drive consumption. Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran said the event would help achieve the 6.5% GDP growth target for FY25.

“Hard to put a number to it, but Kumbh Mela will offer a significant boost to consumption expenditure in the March quarter,” Nageswaran said. India’s GDP growth rose to 6.2% in Q3 of FY25, up from 5.6%, driven by rural spending and government expenditure.

Maha Kumbh Mela Economic Impact

The event had a budget of ₹12,670 crore, with an expected 40 crore visitors. However, it far exceeded estimates, drawing 65 crore devotees by February 26. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath estimated it would contribute over ₹3 lakh crore to the state’s economy.

The economic impact extended beyond Prayagraj, boosting business in Varanasi and Ayodhya. Sectors like hospitality, food, transport, and religious supplies saw increased demand. Textiles, healthcare, and wellness services also benefited.

Infrastructure Investments Fuel Growth

The Uttar Pradesh government allocated ₹5,400 crore for infrastructure, with ₹2,100 crore from the Centre. A total of ₹7,500 crore was spent on roads, flyovers, and underpasses in Prayagraj.

These projects improved connectivity and benefited surrounding districts. The Maha Kumbh Mela reinforced its role as a key economic driver, strengthening both state and national GDP growth.
