The battle for Bihar officially begins today, as voters across 121 constituencies in 18 districts head to the polls for the first phase of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, scheduled for 6 November.
The Bihar Legislative Assembly comprises 243 seats, of which 203 are general, 38 reserved for Scheduled Castes, and 2 for Scheduled Tribes.
In this opening phase, the political fate of 1,314 candidates will be decided by more than 3.75 crore voters across North and Central/South Bihar.
Polling will take place from 7 AM to 5 PM, covering districts such as Darbhanga, Madhepura, Saharsa, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Munger, Sheikhpura, Nalanda, Buxar, Bhojpur, and Patna.
Among the key contests, Tarapur will witness Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary of the NDA face RJD’s Arun Shah.
In Raghopur, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial candidate, is seeking a third consecutive victory, going up against Satish Kumar (BJP) from the NDA and Chanchal Kumar (JSP).
In Mahua, independent MLA and former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav, son of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, faces a strong challenge from RJD’s Mukesh Kumar Raushan, the sitting MLA, LJP’s Sanjay Singh, and Independent Ashma Parveen, who was the runner-up in 2020.
The Alinagar constituency sees folk singer Maithili Thakur representing the BJP, contesting against Binod Mishra (RJD) and Biplaw Kumar Chowdhary (JSP).

In Mokama, JD(U)’s Anant Singh, currently in judicial custody for 14 days following the death of Dular Chand Yadav, a Jan Suraaj ally, during a campaign clash, is contesting against RJD’s Veena Devi.
Meanwhile, in Lakhisarai, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha of the BJP is eyeing a fourth consecutive win, facing Amresh Kumar (Congress) and Suraj Kumar (Jan Suraaj Party).
The 2025 Bihar Elections are shaping up as a direct contest between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Mahagathbandhan.
The NDA brings together the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (United), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), and Rashtriya Lok Morcha.
The Mahagathbandhan, spearheaded by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), includes the Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) led by Dipankar Bhattacharya, the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Mukesh Sahani’s Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP).
Adding another layer to the contest, Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party has fielded candidates in all 243 constituencies, signalling its ambition to establish a third front in Bihar politics.
The second phase of polling for the remaining 122 constituencies will take place on 11 November, with counting of votes scheduled for 14 November.
