Kerala Youth Congress’s March Against Arrest Of Its State President Turns Violent

On Wednesday Youth Congress activists organised a protest march, showing discontent over the arrest of their State president, Rahul Mamkootathil which turned into violence in front of the Secretariat on Wednesday.

Early on a Tuesday morning, Mamkootathil was arrested by the police from his house in Pathanamthitta for allegedly leading a violent attack during a recent march. His bail plea has been rejected by a court and remanded to judicial custody later.

Water cannons were used several times to disperse protesters attempting to breach a barricade set up in front of the Secretariat complex, the administrative hub in the heart of the capital city.

Water cannons were used to clear the protesters from the area as Youth Congress workers continued to exchange heated words with police and attempted to dismantle the barricade. Following that, the protestors sat on the road, raising slogans against both the police and the state’s LDF government.

Earlier, in launching the protest march, Shafi Parambil MLA chastised the police, saying they were acting as servants of the Left government and party leaders. The arrest of Mamkootathil in connection with a Secretariat march organised last month to highlight alleged atrocities against Youth Congress workers during the state government’s Nava Kerala Sadas program led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sparked widespread protests in the southern state on Tuesday. After reviewing a medical report that indicated he had no major health issues, the court here remanded Mamkootathil in judicial custody until January 22.
