Justin Trudeau Stuck In India Due To Aircraft Issue Following Criticism From PM Modi

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his delegation faced unexpected travel troubles in New Delhi due to technical issues with their aircraft. This disruption followed criticism from the Indian government during Trudeau’s visit.

Trudeau, along with government staff and journalists, was scheduled to depart India after the Group of 20 summit. However, it’s uncertain when and how they will leave as the aircraft issues cannot be resolved immediately, according to a statement from Trudeau’s office.

Earlier in the trip, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concerns about Canada allegedly harboring Sikh secessionist groups. The Indian Foreign Ministry highlighted worries about these groups’ connections to organized crime, drug syndicates, and human trafficking. India emphasized the need for cooperation in addressing these threats.

The strained relations between the two nations were evident as Trudeau and PM Modi did not hold a formal bilateral meeting during the summit. However, in a brief conversation, they discussed foreign interference and the rule of law.

In Canada, separatist groups seeking a homeland for Sikhs, a minority community in India, organized a referendum regarding the independence of regions in India with a Sikh majority.

Additionally, an incident outside India’s High Commission in Ottawa led to investigations by India’s anti-terror agency. Canada initiated a public inquiry into foreign interference in its national elections, with a focus on several countries, including India.

There have long been allegations from Indian officials about Canada’s alleged comfort with Sikh separatists advocating for an independent Punjab in northwestern India.

Trudeau acknowledged these issues in his conversations with PM Modi over the years, emphasizing Canada’s commitment to freedom of expression and peaceful protest while condemning violence and hatred. He also noted that the actions of a few should not represent the entire community or Canada as a whole.
