Jamia Hamdard on December 24, 2025, turned solemn as the university came together to honour the memory of its former Chancellor, Syed Shahid Mehdi, remembering him as a principled academic leader whose influence extended far beyond campus boundaries.
The condolence meeting, held at the Board Room of the Vice Chancellor’s office in New Delhi, reflected not only grief but also deep respect for a life devoted to education, public service, and institutional integrity.
Senior academic leaders, faculty members, and staff filled the hall, transforming the gathering into a collective moment of reflection on Mehdi’s enduring contributions. The university observed the occasion with dignity, underscoring the gravity of the loss felt across academic and intellectual circles.
Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr) M Afshar Alam presided over the meeting and led the tributes. In his address, he spoke with visible emotion about Mehdi’s passing and highlighted his long-standing engagement with institutions of higher learning.
Prof Alam described Mehdi as an administrator who combined intellectual depth with moral clarity, and as a scholar who understood the responsibility that accompanies leadership.
He recalled Mehdi’s tenure as the fourth Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, from November 2019 to August 2020, noting that this brief period left a lasting imprint on the university’s academic direction.
Executive Council member Prof Iqbal S Hasnain added to the tributes by recounting key milestones of Mehdi’s distinguished career. He emphasised that Mehdi consistently championed educational reform, inclusivity, and institutional transparency.
According to Prof Hasnain, Mehdi earned respect through reasoned dialogue. He anchored his leadership in unwavering academic values. Registrar Col Tahir Mustafa presented the formal condolence message.
He spoke on behalf of the Vice Chancellor and the Jamia Hamdard fraternity. The university described Syed Shahid Mehdi as a visionary academician. It recognised him as an administrator of rare integrity.
His leadership strengthened Jamia Hamdard’s national standing. It also elevated the university’s international reputation. The message highlighted his firm focus on academic excellence.
It noted that he pursued institutional growth with quiet determination.
He avoided public display and led through substance. The meeting ended with prayers for eternal peace. Participants prayed for strength for the bereaved family.
Faculty, administrators, and staff united in a collective tribute. The gathering affirmed that Mehdi’s legacy will continue to guide academic values.
