Maha Kumbh 2025 has launched several initiatives focused on environmental protection. Among them, the ‘Jal Kalash’ initiative stands out for its efforts to reduce plastic pollution. Located at Arail Ghat, Sector 24, Nishad Raj Marg, it collects and recycles used plastic bottles to prevent environmental harm.
So far, over 20,000 plastic bottles have been collected.
Launched by G. Ashok Kumar, former Director General of the Namami Gange Mission, the Jal Kalash initiative is a 20-day campaign running from February 1 to February 20, 2025. Spearheaded by Development Alternatives, it is supported by the HCL Foundation and local groups like Adarsh Seva Samiti and Mangal Bhumi Foundation.
G. Ashok Kumar emphasized, “To make Maha Kumbh a Green Kumbh, we have taken a small step by collecting plastic bottles.
This initiative symbolizes the urgent need to keep plastic waste out of the Ganga and encourages people to help keep the river clean.”
Environmental activist Rambabu Tiwari highlighted the importance of collective efforts. He noted that, similar to the ‘Ek Thali Ek Thaila’ campaign, the Jal Kalash initiative has significantly reduced plastic waste in the Kumbh area.
Tiwari praised the contributions of Development Alternatives and HCL Foundation, calling their work a vital step toward a Green Kumbh.
A group of dedicated volunteers, including Meera Devi, Arun Kumar, Raj, Rishika, Yashi, and Satish, are actively involved. Their efforts help raise awareness and ensure responsible plastic waste disposal among pilgrims.
The Jal Kalash at Arail Ghat has become a symbol of environmental consciousness during Maha Kumbh 2025.
Thanks to the combined efforts of organizations and individuals, this initiative is a significant step toward protecting the Ganga and promoting sustainability during one of the world’s largest religious events.
