Jaishankar Holds Talks With Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi On West Asia Tensions

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in New Delhi. The two sides reviewed the evolving situation in West Asia and discussed bilateral issues of mutual interest.

Jaishankar also welcomed Araghchi’s participation in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted under India’s 2026 chairship.

Following the meeting, the EAM posted on X, “Had a detailed conversation with FM Abbas Araghchi of Iran this morning in Delhi.”

“Discussed the situation in West Asia and its implications. Also exchanged views on bilateral issues of mutual interest. Appreciate his participation in #BRICSIndia2026,” the post read. 

Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Iranian Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in New Delhi. The engagement marked India’s first high-level diplomatic interaction since the Iran war began.

Addressing the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Thursday, Jaishankar highlighted concerns over the fragile security environment in West Asia.

“The conflict in West Asia merits particular attention. Continuing tensions, risks to maritime traffic, and disruptions to energy infrastructure highlight the fragility of the situation. Safe and unimpeded maritime flows through international waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, remain vital for global economic well-being,” he said.

The Minister reiterated India’s commitment to the UN Charter, adding, “Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity must remain the foundation of international relations. Dialogue and diplomacy are the only sustainable means of resolving conflicts.”

During his address, Araghchi urged the international community to condemn alleged violations of international law. He blamed the United States and Israel. The Minister called for stronger international action on the issue.

“The attacks on my people have been justified with false claims that run counter to the informed assessments of the International Atomic Energy Agency and even America’s own intelligence community,” he said.

The ongoing tensions have also pushed global energy prices higher. Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and LNG supplies.
