Jailed JDU Strongman Anant Singh Secures Victory In Mokama, Bihar

In the high‑stakes 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, veteran strongman Anant Singh from the Janata Dal (United) (JDU) surged ahead in the Mokama constituency. He emerged as the early frontrunner against the Veena Devi‑led challenge from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Singh, a five‑time winner in the seat, aims to reclaim his stronghold despite being jailed on murder charges.

Singh leads by a substantial margin in Mokama, according to trends from the Election Commission of India. Veena Devi, wife of rival ‘bahubali’ Surajbhan Singh, trails far behind.

Mokama, a constituency synonymous with muscle politics and shifting loyalties, has once again become a political battleground.

Singh’s camp has already begun celebrating; banners and sweets appeared early outside his residence, anticipating his release and victory.

Despite his incarceration following a high‑profile murder case, Singh entered the 2025 race under the JDU banner. He appears to be capitalising on his deep local roots.

He debuted in the assembly in 2005, has faced 28 criminal cases, and even lost his seat in 2022 after being convicted in an arms prosecution.

However, on the ground, his support remains intact. His repeated victories from Mokama signal his persistent relevance in Bihar politics.

Veena Devi, whose candidacy represented the RJD’s bid to challenge the JDU’s dominance at the grassroots, has failed to gain traction.

Political analysts say this lapse signals voter fatigue and confirms that local strongholds now hinge on deep networks rather than merely party allegiances.

The BJP‑JDU alliance (NDA) continues to lead in multiple seats statewide, and Mokama’s result further strengthens their momentum.

Singh’s dominance here may reflect the wider political picture. Party strength combined with regional influence can overpower traditional contender narratives.

As counting proceeds across Bihar’s 243 assembly seats, all eyes remain on Mokama for the final verdict.

Singh’s possible victory promises to reshape local coalitions and reaffirm the muscle‑politics narrative in eastern Bihar.
