A major fire broke out in a three-storey house in the Tilak Nagar area of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, killing at least six people in the early hours of Wednesday. Officials confirmed the fatalities and stated that the blaze spread rapidly, catching residents off guard.
Authorities suspect that a short circuit linked to an electric vehicle, plugged in for charging outside the house, triggered the fire.
Flames engulfed the entire structure within minutes, leaving residents with little time to escape.
The house belonged to a businessman named Manoj. Neighbours said the family had guests over, increasing the number of people inside.
Indore Collector Shivam Verma confirmed that more than 10 people were present when the fire broke out. Rescue teams saved three individuals, but failed to rescue six others in time.
A firefighting team of 8 to 10 personnel rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after sustained efforts.
Emergency responders acted quickly after receiving information around 3 AM, but the fire’s intensity made rescue operations difficult.
Residents alerted the fire services immediately after noticing the blaze, but the fire spread rapidly, causing major damage and casualties. Some people also suffered injuries.
Authorities admitted the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment and sent the bodies for post-mortem.
Local councillor Rajiv Jain described the family as socially active and well-regarded, calling the incident deeply unfortunate.
Officials have launched an investigation and continue to probe the exact cause of the fire.
